When starting a character take a piece of advice of the part in common courtesy regarding character development. You need to make sure your character has a soul, that he's an actual person that has a background, a life that burdens or supports him. Don't be just another NPC.

Deciding your character's characteristics is detrimental to adding a favorable aesthetic to your avatar, how people will perceive you and what you'll be known for. What gender is your character, age, race... what's your career choice, etc.

You can then branch out and include family relations, a brother or a sister, relations with your parents, and how that affects your main character. Your goals, desires, and failures and how that has a mental impact on who you are today. The struggles in your life already passed and the struggles that still affect you through social and environmental expectations.

When you start a new character, focus on some of these starter points and the main factor that decides your whole character is this simple question - "How does your character die?" - knowing that you are not immortal and that there is a beginning and an inevitable end. You will be more able to comprehend the progress of the middle part and tell my legacy.

Remember that you don't have to be important to everyone on the server but you should be interesting. Set your story apart from the rest and make choices that also include those inopportune to your progression and you become a winner.

Belonging to a Neighborhood

To belong in a neighborhood you must visualize the environment of one.
Simply put you need to be aware of your surroundings, immerse yourself with the historical background of our timeline and act upon it with your character, leave your mark on history. Some videos below will aim to explain this better.

Example: You chose to live in a ghetto area of the city, you should take up its struggles as well - poverty, bills to pay, how these things affect you. Whether your character is in school or not; education and bullying, if your family is poor - eviction, moving out, etc.

Be Spontaneous

Be spontaneous in your roleplay, don't jump hoops, don't run through steps, don't rush. Take everything that's coming to your character as a new experience, learn, make relations, grow your character and your knowledge through doing and experiencing instead of knowing everything straight on.

Some things that are overseen normally is that people want self-protection so they instantaneously know how to use a gun and defend themselves. Not only is this MG and PG but it defeats the purpose of roleplay; character creation and development. Take everything as spontaneous as possible and help your character instead of yourself. Make the progress instead of assuming it.

When affiliating with factions you'll immediately be set expectations the faction wants you to meet, so starting out innocent and fresh is not a bad thing, it's ideal for a good impression to differentiate from all other hard-boiled or pre-programmed characters.

Example: Learning how to throw a gang sign as you get closer to being affiliated with the local gang in your neighborhood.
