Konka Soweto is a restaurant and nightclub in Pimville, Soweto. The establishment, which was revamped and rebranded from the old Icon Soweto nightclub earlier this year, seems to be owned by the entrepreneur who owns another Soweto hangout spot, Moja Cafe.

Over the past few weeks, several of the country’s biggest artists have performed at Konka, including headline performances from the likes of AKA, Riky Rick, DJ Maphorisa, TKZee, DBN Gogo and Black Motion..


While many Twitter users have hit out at the reckless spending at the establishment and attributed it to money laundering, Konka public relations manager Linda Moeketsi hit back.

“The speculations on social media are disheartening as they have never been made for non-black-owned establishments who have been operating in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg for over 20 years. Black success should be celebrated and not questioned, and the most disappointing thing about it all is that it is always questioned by our fellow black brothers and sisters.”

This is what a close source had to say about the club: “It’s ghetto fabulous. Ghetto because of the location, fabulous because of the experience. People deem it as expensive but in realness, it’s different from other local establishments. They provide security, aesthetic and interpersonal service.”

Established by young South African businessman Kutlwano Pitso in the heart of Soweto, KONKA has more or less gained cult-like notoriety for being Joburg's new place to be seen. It takes the place of the old Icon Soweto nightclub.

Here you'll find the rich and famous, influencers, socialites, politicians and anybody with a little bit extra to spend! The place is described as an ‘experience’ and plays host to local entertainment personalities like Black Coffee, DBN Gogo, Cassper Nyovest and DJ Maphorisa. Many more artists and DJs have all been seen entertaining masses on the KONKA stage. 

The establishment is famously known on social media for expensive bottles of premium alcohol, with some bottles retailing for over R14 000. The cheapest bottle of champagne on the menu can cost you about R1 300. Remember to leave at tip!
